How to start an Etsy print-on-demand shop for $0 upfront

You can launch an Etsy print-on-demand shop without paying for inventory or software. You can't make it completely free, though: Etsy charges fees, and some only apply once you sell. Here's what each step involves, using free tools only.
What you will (and won't) pay
With print-on-demand you pay the print provider only after a customer has paid you. Etsy's main fees for US sellers are:
- a $0.20 listing fee per listing (renews every four months or when the item sells)
- a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping
- payment processing of 3% + $0.25 per order
- Offsite Ads fees, but only on sales that come from those ads
Some countries also charge a one-time shop setup fee. Fees vary by country, so check Etsy's official fee policy before you open your shop. "$0 upfront" really means paying no monthly fees and buying no stock. Your only upfront cost is a few cents per listing.
Step 1: Research a niche with free tools
Start with the free plan of eRank to find keywords with demand and manageable competition, and use EverBee's free searches to check that similar listings actually sell. More options are in the best Etsy SEO tools in 2026.
Step 2: Create designs on a free plan
Canva and Kittl both have free plans. Before you sell, read each tool's license terms for commercial and print-on-demand use. Some assets and some free plans restrict it.
Step 3: Connect a print provider
Both Printful and Printify have $0 starting plans and connect directly to Etsy. Not sure which to pick? Read Printful vs Printify for beginners.
Step 4: Make mockups
Printful and Printify both generate free product mockups. If you want lifestyle photos, look at the mockup tools, many of which have free tiers.
Step 5: Price for profit, then list
Add up the base product price, shipping and every Etsy fee. Our free Etsy fee & profit calculator does the math. Use real buyer phrases from your research in the title and all 13 tags. Etsy allows up to 13 tags per listing.
Step 6: Learn from real data
Once you have visits, Etsy Stats shows the actual search terms people used to find you. Add more of what works. Only pay for a tool once your shop's revenue covers it.
